Nashville,
Tennessee will be the site for a joint meeting of the Southeastern
College Art Conference and the Mid-America College Art Association.
Vanderbilt University will be the host institution.
It has been more than thirty years since SECAC has been held in
Nashville so the local universities and cultural institutions are
going out of their way to make sure that this is the best SECAC/MACAA
conference ever. We expect a large turnout because Nashville, or
should we say "Music City," is easily accessible by plane
and car. Flight discounts have been arranged with American Airlines.
Gray Line is giving us discounts on the airport shuttle.
Artists, art and architectural historians, museum administrators,
visual resource professionals, art educators, and graduate students
are encouraged to attend and participate. We are prepared to handle
more than 60 sessions and there are some spectacular opportunities
for members to exhibit work. Through the generosity of several local
institutions, a rich variety of sponsored sessions will be held.
Those attending will have the opportunity to view the Stieglitz
Collection and the Aaron Douglas murals at Fisk University.
The Frist Center for the Visual
Arts, the Cheekwood Museum
of Art, and the Vanderbilt
University Fine Arts Gallery have planned special events and
receptions while The
Parthenon will host the SECAC/MACAA Members Exhibition which
is to be juried by the celebrated author and critic, Eleanor Heartney.
Graduate students are encouraged to participate and take advantage
of a College Art Association
sponsored Career Development Workshop. This event is designed to
help those seeking teaching positions.
Membership Show and Other Exhibition Opportunities.
One of the most exciting aspects of this conference is the fact
that with the submission of one exhibition application, one becomes
eligible for many show opportunities. No entry fee will be required.
Just become a member of SECAC or MACAA.
The membership show will be held at The
Parthenon. Once the juror makes her Selections, she will send
the slides back to Nashville for additional reviews by the Frist
Center for the Visual Arts, the Vanderbilt University Art Department,
Belmont University, Tennessee State University, the Tennessee Arts
Commission, the Sarratt Gallery at Vanderbilt, and others.
These institutions will be identifying individuals for future solo
and group exhibitions. In other words, one application will serve
as an exhibition proposal for many shows during the conference and
in the years ahead.
